heroes
Sat, Jul 29 2006 09:17PM
holy shit. this show rules.

i just watched the pilot for nbc's new show "heroes" and it kicks major ass. seriously, if you enjoy "lost" and/or comic books and superheroes, "heroes" is for you. imagine the movie "unbreakable" as a tv show; real people wake up one day to discover they have super human powers. the pilot (well, the first half of the pilot; it was originally 2 hours, but its being shown as two episodes) was awesome and i can't wait for the show to premier. its going air on mondays at 9 (right before aaron sorkin's new show "studio 60 on the sunset strip; another show i'm pumped about). watch it.

2006 predictions, cincinnati reds edition
Mon, Apr 3 2006 08:03AM
while i love baseball, i only really care about one team, my hometown reds, and they suck. but its opening day, so we'll overlook that for now and feign optimisim for the new year. and as any true baseball purist knows, its not opening day until the cincinnati reds play their first game (tradition's tradition, regardless of how mlb messes with the schedule).

so, here my 2006 predictions for the reds (feigning optimisim over):

-the reds will lead the league in homeruns, because...
-the outfield of griffey, dunn, and kearns will hit a combined 120 homers (if healthy), because...
-great america will give up more homeruns than coors field, and...
-probably the most in the national league, so...
-the reds will lead the league in runs allowed, meaning....
-the pitching staff will once again have the highest era in the league, and....
-probably all of baseball, resulting in....
-the reds finishing anywhere between 10 and 15 games under .500, which...
-puts them in either 5th or 6th place in the n.l. central.

hopefully ken griffey can stay healthy for an entire season. hopefully adam dunn learns that "homerun, strikeout, walk" aren't the only options when at bat. hopefully felipe lopez can finally be the heir to barry larkin he's supposed to be and stop cancelling out every spectacular play with three errors. hopefully the reds can get some quality #1 or #2 starting pitchers instead of having a rotation of #4 and #5 guys.

i think they call this a "rebuilding decade." but i'm still going to watch, i'm still going to cheer, and, for the thrid straight year, i'm going to duck out of work early to watch opening day vs. the cubs (thank god for wgn- man, thought i'd never say that). hey, if the bengals can turn it around, anything's possible; it just might take fifteen years. !-)

tainted love
Wed, Mar 15 2006 11:54AM
i am the only person that remembers this levi's commercial from back in the day? tainted love came on the radio today in our lab and when i mentioned this commercial, all i got was a bunch of blank stares. is it just my office that is clueless to this ad, or do more people not know about it? i think this commercial is hysterical (and i just found out it was done by spike jonze, making it even better), but no one (i know) seems to remember it. shame.

white like larry

an interesting column on espn's page2 written by chuck klosterman (fargo rock city, sex, drugs, and cocoa puffs, killing yourself to live). it revolves around the question of whether gonzaga's adam morrison is being called the "next larry bird" because his game is similar to bird's or simply because he's white.

kevin, mike, me, christie, and casey

this new year's was the first time i'd a)celebrated the night not at someone's house and b)drank more after midnight than before. we spent most of the night at cosmo's in covington before getting a few drinks at zazou's before it was all over.

cincinnati's linz family wins the amazing race $1 million prize

i don't watch reality television, but when a high school classmate (nick linz, st. x '99) and his siblings are involved, i can stand to check it out.

there are something like 7,823,497,532 members of the linz family that live in the cincinnati area; if you went to a catholic school in cincinnati, you've met a linz kid. it was cool to see them wearing st. x and bengals t-shirts on the show and hearing them talk about skiyline chili. it was also cool to see them playing cornhole in their introduction video during the first episode.

and kudos to the linz's for their decision to spread the $1 million prize money amongst their entire family. they are giving half to their parents and splitting the other half among all 7 of the siblings. pretty cool guys. who dey!

man, what a football weekend!

-the bengals go into pittsburgh and take it to the steelers. with a two game lead in the division, cincinnati is the the driver's seat to win the afc north, and have ensured their first winning season since 1990. damn, its been a long time.

-keeping with the "cincinnati" theme, my alma mater, st. xavier high school, beat massillon to win their first D-1 state football championship. i was there the first two times st. x played in and lost the state championship game ('92 and '98; they were also runner-up in '01), so its great to see them finally break through. this was st. x's 36th overall OHSAA state championship, which is the most for any school in the state.

-and the added bonus of the weekend was watching virginia tech choke away a bcs bowl bid. i guess there's just something about vick's not being able to be fsu in big games. i also loved when marcus vick joined kicker martin gramatica in the "i hurt myself celebrating a score" club.
big time football program???

boy, it's a good thing uva dropped the pep band and dressing up for games for a marching band and orange t-shirts because otherwise, we wouldn't be 3-2 and on the verge of not going to a bowl game.

after 5 games, the 'hoos are 3-2, with 6 games remaining (4 at home, 2 on the road), meaing we'd have to win at least 3 games to become bowl eligible. two of those games are at carolina and vs. temple, which *should* be wins, meaning just 1 more win would be needed out of the other 4 games. problem is, the other 4 games are against the following: #4/5 florida state, georgia tech, #3 virginia tech, at #6/7 miami. do you see a win in there for virginia? i don't. that makes us 5-6, and out of the bowl picture. yeah, go hooze for big time college football!!!

tejada faces zito
Tue, Aug 23 2005 10:19AM
miguel tejada faces barry zito in the top of the 4th at mcafee coliseum in oakland. zito was great until he imploded in the 7th and blew the game.

tejada and eric byrnes got huge cheers when they were introduced, eventhough both now play for baltimore (and there were many fans sporting tejada and byrnes a's jerseys). sosa got a round of boos, which i really didn't understand. but since raffy didn't play in this game (he had just come off this suspension a game or two before), i guess they needed someone to boo in connection with steroids.

mario's star on the walk of game at the metreon in san francisco. the other inducees, along with mario (or mare-i-o, if you're retarded like weix), in the inaugural class of 2005 were nolan bushnell, shigeru miyamoto, link, sonic the hedgehog, and halo.

little league record

this kid from california racked up 18 strikeouts in a regulation 6-inning little league world series game. that would be every out for this team. i don't care what level of baseball you play, that's pretty good.

mythbusters
Fri, Aug 12 2005 09:35PM
me, my brother tony, and jamie hyneman, co-host of Mythbusters on the discovery channel.

my brother and i went into san francisco today to hunt down m5 industries, where they film Mythbusters for the discovery channel. when we pulled up, we saw one of the co-hosts, jamie hyneman, standing oustide in the parking lot, looking under the hood of an old nissan 300zx. when we asked him for a picture, he said, "uh, sure, but you have to have help me push this car first." so my brother and i got behind the car with him and pushed it forward a few feet so it was in a parking space. we went to m5 to look around and maybe get a picture of the sign out front, and we ended up meeting jamie hyneman. pretty cool.

Lance Cpl. Michael Cifuentes

so i get a call last wednesday night from my friend kevin back home in cincinnati (where he's a producer with channel 9 news). he asks me if i'd heard about the marines that had been killed in the roadside bombing in iraq. i said that i had, but only in passing mention, something i read on the bottom line ticker as i channel surfed in my hotel in roanoke. then i informs me that the marines were from reserve units based out of ohio and that one of the casualties is mike cifuentes.

mike (or as he was nicknamed, "blueblocker" or "crusk") graduated from st. xavier high school in 1998, one year ahead of me. and like me, he was very active in the band at st. x. the above picture is from the fall of 1997, mike's senior year, from a game in cleveland against cleveland st. ignatius. i don't really remember the circumstances surrounding it, but i think mike's tuba was broken, and instead of marchnig the the show holding nothing (or not marching at at all), he found this banjo and took it out onto the field with him. i remember thinking at the time it was one of the most ridiculous thing i'd ever seen.

you never think that anyone you know if going to killed in action, even with a war (or whatever you want to call it) going on. it's always someone else in some other city, until the day when that someone else become you. i knew the cifuentes family well during my time at st. x (mike's younger brother dan was a year below me at x and also in the band), and my thoughts and prayers are with them as they struggle to deal with their incredible loss.

Years of passing cannot severe
ties of old days from the new.
We are Xavier men forever
as we hail the white and blue.
