Engagements/Weddings
Wed, Aug 29 2007 07:50AM
Come on people, what's going on here? Why is almost everyone in the banned class of '04 getting engaged and/or married all of a sudden? Geez, it's like you people have these life plans or something to fulfill. :-)

*Mushy sentiments* Although seriously, congrats to everyone who has gotten married. Hope everything was awesome on your honeymoons and you enjoy the times you have together. *end of mushy senitments*
Sound of Music
Wed, Aug 29 2007 07:45AM
Ben and I went to go see the Sound of Music in Grant Park last night, for the last free movie in the parks that Chicago offers over the summer. Of course, it was packed, and all we brought was a blanket to sit on (most everyone else had chairs) so I saw about 2/3 of the actual movie. :-P

But it was so much fun - people clapped at the end of songs, when the Captain rips up the Nazi flag, etc. Some people (including me, but softly) were singing along.

It was quite humid, but the skyline from the park was amazing. I love how mush free stuff there is to do in Chicago if you can just make yourself go out and do it. Let hope there are a few things to do in the winter...*shiver*

It's hard to believe it's been a year
Sun, Mar 4 2007 08:44PM
Tomorrow will be one year since Scott passed away. I still think about him so often. I was going through my photo albums tonight and thinking of all the great memories I have of him. Scott, we love you dearly and miss you.
I'm about to hurt someone

There is a medical student on my rotation who is sitting next to me right now, watching Carlos Mencia on his laptop without headphones. You know, comedy about racism with lots of curse words in it. In a pediatrician's office. With other students in the room trying to study. I've already asked him to turn it down, maybe use the headphones I know are in his bag, but he refuses.

Therefore, I think I am totally justified in administering some bodily harm to him. GAHHHHHH!!!!!

A story from Chicago's West Side
Mon, Jun 25 2007 08:45AM
One morning on CTA Bus #126 Westbound, I overheard/observed a conversation between two other riders. One was an elderly black lady. The second was a young black girl who got on and sat across from the elderly lady. After a few moments of staring, the woman tries to get the young girl's attention by calling her some name.

<paraphased convo>
OBW: Excuse me honey, are you *blank*? Are you this person's daughter?

YBG: *some eye rolling, looking away* Yeah, I am, but my name is really *blank*.

OBW: I knew you way back when. You look just the same. How is your mamma doing?

YBG: Actually, your grandson just robbed our house, and we have a warrent out for his arrest.

OBW: Oh really? Well, I haven't spoken to him in a long time, so I don't know about that. Say hi to your mamma for me.
<end of convo>

WTF?!?! I mean, where else would you hear something like that? I just kinda sat there in shock and almost missed my stop because I never expected a twist in the story like that.
30 more days to go!!!
Thu, Nov 23 2006 09:40AM
One more month and then I am done with the hell that is my internal medicine rotation at King's County Hospital in Brooklyn, NY. Then hopefully I will stop hating my life... I can't wait for Christmas to get here.
Final pic for this album
Sat, Feb 24 2007 02:36PM
An obvious choice for a pictorial for Seattle, the Space Needle. I took this from the deck of the cruise ship, the Norwegian Star, the day we left. I had wanted to visit the Needle in person, but sadly never got around to it. It'd be pretty cool to have a drink up in the revolving restaurant.

But to sum up, my trip to Seattle and Kent to visit Ben, and surprise my family by being able to go on the cruise, was an awesome experience. It was such a nice reward after studying so hard and long for my Step 1, and a good way to relax before starting on two years of rotations and traveling around the country (again).

This past week in surgery was pretty awesome. I got to go to the Apligraf dinner on Tuesday at Wildfire in downtown Chicago. It's living tissue used to heal venous stasis ulcers and diabetic foot ulcers. It costs $29/cm2, with one disc being about $1200!!!! But it seems to have pretty good results, so maybe it's worth it. But the dinner was awesome, with an open bar, and it was nice to chill with Dr. D for a bit.

Then on Thursday we had an emergency surgery on an HIV patient that lasted 4 hours. It was an exploratory laparotomy - basically, you open up the abdomen and look around because the pt had an acute (painful) abdomen. Almost immediately you saw the perforation leaking green ooze, and Dr. D was like "Let's explore some more." It turns out the pt had like 5 perfs and tons of tumors in his small bowel, which is apparently really rare. So a bunch of pictures were taken, then almost the whole small bowel was removed. Totally crazy.

Next was a lap chole (yawn ;-)), and then I got to scrub in on an AMPUTATION!!!! Yup, this pt had gotten frostbite and we had to remove his right foot. Sadly, I did not get to wield the saw, but I did get to sew up some of the stump. I'm getting pretty good at suturing, if I do say so myself. :-D

'Marley and Me' by John Grogan
Sat, Jan 20 2007 08:26PM
I finallly got around to reading this book, which has been on my to do list for ever and ever. LOVED IT. Of course, I am a sucker for a story about a dog, but this one made me laugh out loud every couple of minutes. Some of the things this yellow lab got up to reminded me of Shadow, other things were almost unbelieveable in how crazy they were. Touching moments, funny moments, relatable moments, very very sad moments, this book had it all. (Isn't my Shadow boy so cute? He has gotten so gray...)

Update
Thu, Jan 11 2007 03:12PM
In a totally unexpected turn of events, a person at Ross actually did their job and helped me arrange a radiology rotation at Prince George's Hospital in Maryland for the next two weeks, helping me to not have a 30+ day gap in my schedule. Thank goodness. So I am uber excited about having something to do. Also, I plan on making my final apartment decision this weekend, and will post the results. :-) Chicago is such an awesome city, so I totally want people to come and visit. If you come in the summer, I will only be a few blocks from the lake, which I hear is quite wonderful that time of year.

Oh yeah, and my mom just brought home 2 bridal magazines. Apparently we have started planning for the wedding! EEEEPPP! I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact that my older sister is getting hitched. So if you have any advice you'd like to pass on through me, I/she would appreciate it. Thanks!

My sister Sharon and her boyfriend Matt just got engaged to be married!!!!!! OMG - this is the secret I had that I couldn't tell before I got her permission, b/c I'm not sure if any family members monitor my site and didn't want them finding out before she had a chance to tell people.

This pic was taken by my mom over Thanksgiving which I was not here for. :-( The two law enforcement officers are tired after prepping, frying and eating all that turkey.

Trip to San Francisco
Wed, Jan 3 2007 05:44PM
Dec. 28th to Jan. 2nd Ben and I traveled to San Francisco, more specifically to Alameda, CA, to visit his father Kerry and celebrate the New Year together. Kerry is awesome and bought our plane tickets AND let us stay at his apartment, thank you SO SO much BTW. I had an incredible time, relaxing and spending time with my boy. Enjoy the pics!

P.S. This isn't my picture unfortunately, I just wanted a nice picture to start off this album.
Merry Christmas everyone!

Well, I am back home from my 3 month sentence in New York, Queens for living, Brooklyn for working. After 15+ hours a day, 5-6 days a week, I am freaking exhausted. My plan right now is to sleep as much as possible before I head out to San Francisco for New Year's with Ben. :-D Then hopefully I will find some elective rotation to do for January before I move to Chicago for the next year or so. I can't wait - I visited once and I fell in love with the city - so clean, so nice, so different from New York.

No worries, I have a ton of pics to put up, I know I am very far behind, but I am trying to do better. I just needed to have good internet, not the kind I was stealing from the Catholic school next door in Queens...*whistles innocently* Anyhoo, stay tuned!
Mi casa ahora
Thu, Nov 23 2006 10:10AM
This is where I live in Queens, NY. For the first two weeks I lived in the tiny closet-like room on the left, but after Eric moved out I took over his room, which is on the middle floor on the right. I live with 2 other medical students, we share a common kitchen and bathroom. Rent is by the week in cash, which is nice temporarily, except when the landlord's brother tries to say I paid for only 2 weeks when I actually paid for 3...But whatever, soon I shall either be living at home to save money and to do an elective rotation in VA or DC, or possibly living in Chicago.
Out to dinner
Sat, Sep 2 2006 06:06PM
We had dinner with Ben's mom the night after the tunnel trip. She took us out to a very nice steakhouse to celebrate out passing the USMLE step 1. She told the staff that we had just become doctors, so we got a table with an awesome view of downtown Seattle in the distance.

This picture was taken at the bar where we had drinks. I love the bar behind us - I think it looks so cool. I wish more of my pictures had this backdrop...lol, I'm such a lush, I know. I had a martini (of course), a lemon drop which was pretty good.

This is a picture of an amelanistic green turtle that I believe hatched in Dominica. The photo was taken by my friend Rowan Byrne BSc (Hons) Dip TechW. He is a marine and freshwater biologist (www.marinecreatures.com and a wildlife photographer (www.seapics.com) from Dublin. I met him in a pub in Roseau, the capital of Dominica. A very nice guy, he takes amazing photos, 4 of which I bought and gave as Christmas presents this past year. I highly suggest you check out the sites I listed above because he has some great stuff.

Rowan was a guest speaker of the Ross SCUBA club, where he talked about his program in Dominica to get locals involved and educated about letting the green turtles lay their eggs on the beach without interfering (i.e. hacking them to bits as the locals were wont to do for green turtle soup). He also has really sad pictures of killed turtles and such. But yeah, enjoy the marine pics! Buy some if you really like them! ;-)
Reflection time
Sun, Jul 9 2006 08:46PM
It's late at night, and I'm importing old photos into iPhoto to go over, and chatting with a friend from Ross, Mr. Evil. (evilmcnasty.blogspot.com.). I check out his blog, and something he wrote really summed up what I've been feeling. Here I am, going to med school, preparing for the rest of my life, and a major part of future things I want to accomplish (fulfilling job, chance to do Doctors without Borders, etc.) and somehow I feel as though I am being left behind. That life is passing me by - while everyone I know is moving forward and experiencing life, I'm just here. Going through the whole experience of living in another country, going to classes that challenge me, or in other words kick my ass at moments, being separated from old friends and family for basically 2 years, has been emotionally draining.

I was lucky enough to meet some truly awesome people while at Ross, and I hope we manage to keep in touch despite scattering after Miami, and our steps, and starting rotations around the country. But at the same time, I mourn the people that I have unfortunately grown apart from, just due to the life I am living now. I miss you all, and it makes me sad when I look at a lot of these photos on my site, or see you online. My old friends have jobs, new degrees, new boyfriends/girlfriends, are engaged, are married, whatever. Yet I don't know most of the details, I don't know the how, why, the when or where. The stuff that I would have known if it had happened while I was at UVA. And that just makes me really sad.

Most of the time I realize it's worth it - that I am doing what is good for me and my life, despite all of the sacrifices it takes. But I do have these moments where I just wish I could have a job and an apartment and a life with friends like everyone else has. If this post is rambling and doesn't make a lot of sense, you can direct your comments to that brick wall over there. Or to the bottom of this post, whatever you choose. :-P
Hockey Girls
Sat, May 6 2006 08:43PM
Hayley and I were wearing our away jerseys to go watch the UVA men's hockey team play. This was both of our first year ever playing hockey. I stayed on the team for the whole 4 years, Hayley left after that year to go play rugby. However, it was AFTER she stopped playing hockey that she got several teeth knocked out. Those rugby girls are vicious...

A video podcast I just found that I really like is called DiveFilm Podcast Video. It's just beautiful underwater footage filmed by different people, and it reminds me of how much I wish I had an underwater case for my digital camera, and how much I wish I could go diving again.
Scanning Pictures
Thu, May 4 2006 07:42PM
Since I've begun to study for the step at home for the past 3 weeks, I've been kinda of at a loss of what to do at home to unwind...well, other than watching DVDs and sitting in the hot tub. So I learned how to use the scanner, and I'm slowly going through all of my photoalbums and scanning old pictures. I've put only a few up so far, but I plan on doing a lot more in the near future.

As a side note, I also tried to convert some old VHS tapes to put on the computer, so I could either burn it to a DVD or stick in on my external drive. However, there is this silly copyright crap that prevented me from doing it. So sadly, I have been unable to put my VHS copies of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles I and II: Secret of the Ooze on my computer. :-( Does anyone know how to get around this? Grr, if criminals can do it, how come I can't figure it out?

Wicked
Sun, Feb 26 2006 04:27PM
For Valentine's Day, Ben and I went to see the Broadway musical Wicked in Ft. Lauderdale - it was fantastic!

We had dinner at a wonderful steakhouse, and then went to the show. I have never seen a Broadway play, and I have been wanting to see Wicked for the longest time - I just figured I'd have to go to New York to see it.

Exploded Coke bottle
Fri, Nov 25 2005 06:49PM
So I was trying to quickly chill a Coke to drink, but then I forget about it. Unfortunately, it was a glass bottle. So it totally shattered in my tiny little freezer. The freezer that also says should be defrosted every week to prevent the massive amounts of ice buildup that tends to occur, as can be seen in the picture. I just recently cleaned it out, which involved chiseling the bits out, and trying to avoid cutting myself on the glass shards.

Need Housing in Miami
Wed, Oct 19 2005 03:36PM
I figured I should post my quest for housing on my website as well.

I am going to need a place to live in Miami come mid-January. I will be staying there for my 5th semester of medical school, and possibly for a 6 week Kaplan review course for the USMLE Step 1 exam. So that means I'll be there until about June. If you know of anyone who has a place for rent that is nice and affordable, and close to the Miami/Kendell area, please let me know.

Furnished would be a big freaking plus, but is not totally necessary.

OK, thanks!

Pathology II Lab Time!
Tue, Sep 13 2005 06:31PM
So today I got to go to the Princess Margaret Hospital in Roseau for pathology lab. If you are lucky, you get to put on scrubs and watch an autopsy on an unrefridgerated body in a room with no AC. Sadly, I was not that lucky.

Instead, my group (A8) got to take a tour of the pathology lab of the hospital. It was actually really interesting. Everyone that worked there was really nice and knowledgeable, and all were slightly crazy in some way.

The histopathologist was my favorite. She told us all about how to take autopsy or biopsy samples, how to fix them, put them in wax, make slides, stain them, etc. Then she put on some gloves and took these containers down from some shelves.*** The first one was a dead baby *don't insert dead baby jokes here* that had a malformed arm and autopsy scars. It was SO crazy - just chillin' in that jar on the shelf. I also got to see a 24 week old fetus that had been aborted - it was a perfectly formed little male baby, but it could fit in the palm of your hand and it was see-through - it almost looked like it was made out of jello. We also saw a teratoma that was in an ovary - the ovary was almost as big as a child's head. Gross!

The woman at the blood bank was also really nice - for some reason I seem to know a lot about blood transfusions, so she made me feel smart, which I always appreciate. :-)

All in all it was a good day, although I didn't like the fact that we spent as much time driving to and from the hospital as we actually spent in the lab. And I did really want to see a live autopsy, but the guy who does them was out of the country this week. :-(

***I was going to google for some pictures that looked like what I saw today...but then I figured my descriptions might just be enough to gross most of you out without the visual, so I refrained. :-D

The start of another semester...
Wed, Sep 7 2005 06:34AM
Well, I know I haven't posted anything new for awhile, mostly due to pesky little things known as finals, going to St. Maarten, etc. BTW, I will have St. Maarten pics up as soon as IT gets its ass into gear and makes the mac wireless network not suck anymore.

It's the first day of my 4th semester, the last one that I will spend (hopefully) on this island. I shall be coming back to the States on Dec. 23rd - just in time for Jenny's 24th birthday. We are in classroom 4 with nice plasma TVs, I get to go to real hospitals and interview patients, I get to play doctor, um I mean practice for ICM, with my friends (cute males, especially, please ;-)), and practice using simulators. Yay!

Oh yeah, as soon as I take them, I will put up pictures of my apartment on Lizard Trail as well, cause I have been meaning to do that for awhile.
Salybia Mission Project
Wed, Jul 20 2005 06:51PM
On Saturday I took a 1 1/2 hour transport with 11 of my fellow students to go to the Carib territory on the Atlantic side of Dominica, where the Salybia clinic is located.

The Salybia clinic is a free clinic held on Saturdays where we provide health care to the indigenous peoples of Dominica. This means I get to wear my stethoscope around my neck and look important. ;-) J/k.

Actually, there was already a line of people in front of the clinic when we finally arrived, so we got right to work. I began to interview a 24 year old with her 16 month old daughter, both of whom had complaints. I was able to get really good interviews for both of them, which I need to do my Behavioral Science write up. I got to take the mother's pulse and blood pressure (all with my own equipment!) - I feel all medical! Lol.

Then, when it was our turn, we went in to see Dr. Sandford. I had to present both patients to him, just like I would on rounds in the hospital, and then he did the physcial exams. The doctor was wonderful, he gave me such good material to write my patient history on. That alone made my day. After Amy and I each finished, we went to go eat lunch down by the cemetery at the ocean. We found a nice shady place by a stream, it was awesome.

When we got back to the clinic, it was just in time to see a man with an infected hand get it lanced to drain the pus. Holy crap - that was one of the craziest things I have seen IRL, but don't worry, I'll spare all of you the details. ;-) Then I went outside and played with a goat while waiting for the last of the people to come to the transport on the way home. We finally left the clinic around 3pm, stopping once along the way to pick up some Carib baskets made by the Indians.

I had such a good time on this trip, I can't wait to go again next semester. Don't worry, I'll be putting some pics up as soon as I get them from Amy, and I'll put others up from the new clinic construction that I participated in last semester.
The Dawn and Drew Show
Thu, Jul 14 2005 02:29PM
For those of you with iTunes 4.9, you may have discovered Podcasting. While this is something that has been around for months, apparently, I only found out about it through iTunes. And I just wanted to make a plug for one of my favorite shows so far - the Dawn and Drew Show.

This is their own description of the show:
two ex gutter punks fall in love, buy a retired farm in wisconsin and tell the world their dirty secrets... always profane, rarely profound.

So, think about trying it out, and getting one of the truly independent Podcasts out there back into the top 20 podcasts.

If any one else has show recommendations to make, I'd love to hear them!
iPod Cartoon
Wed, Jul 13 2005 07:45PM
This cartoon by Greg Scanlon ran in the Cavalier Daily at some point in my career at UVA. I thought it was really funny, and so true at the end of my stay at Mr. Jefferson's resort.

Greg was nice enough to search through his archives and send the cartoon after I had emailed him about it. I got it in less than 3 days - I was very impressed. Thanks!

Happy Birthday to Me!
Tue, Jun 21 2005 12:26PM
Well, I turn the ripe old age of 23 today. Once again, I find myself celebrating on a island, except this time it is in the West Indies instead of Panama. ;-)

The five hours of class I had to attend today were made better by several things:
1. Dr. Tweeddale quasi-singing happy birthday to me in front of the whole class
2. Getting chocolate from multiple people
3. The poem Ani wrote for me during the Neoplasia lecture:
Happy Birthday Vicky,
You really are quite cool.
I'm so glad I met you, here at Ross Med School.

You're obsessed with your Mac,
You'd eat it if you could,
Anything is better
Than that greasy fried shackfood!

We share a brain,
And we're joined at the hip,
Pretty soon you'll have a threesome
With Meredith and Chip!

I hope you have fun,
And all your dreams come true,
Happy Birthday Vicky,
We all love you!

~Ani

4.
5. The cards I got from my parents and my sister :-)
6. Everyone who has wished me a good one - I appreciate it!
7. The awesome dinner at Indian River Cuisine
8. My cake - made by Meredith and helped decorated with Stefanie

It's Nacho (dog)
Sun, May 22 2005 08:39AM
This dog has snuck into classroom 5 more times than I can count now. And there are several girls in the class who feel the need to freak out whenever the poor thing even looks at them. Normally, this happened in between classes or while we were studying at night.

No other person would even try to get it out, so it always fell to me to do it. Nacho knows me, cause we spent time together over break - I fed him leftover Chinese, he slept out on my porch, etc. He's so cute!

Anyways, on Thursday he actually got in during class. And the girl behind me freaked out, and kept trying to get the professor to stop lecturing to deal with her issues. But it was awesome - Dr. Paton just kept on talking. So I got up and got him out with the help of another guy. And the stupid girl didn't even thank me. I think she is discriminating against me...
Welcome back to the island
Sun, May 8 2005 11:25AM
I arrived in Dominica Friday afternoon, thankfully with all my luggage. I was worried there for a second, when I had only 20 minutes to make it to my connecting flight - and I don't think my luggage can run as fast as I can.

On Saturday, my good friends Cliff and Eric help me move all of my stuff into my new apartment and then we head to the beach. Fun was had, skin was burned, the catamaran was sailed - its good to be back and not have school just yet. So we plan to eat dinner, and I go home to shower and change...this is where the fun starts.

I go to turn on the shower, and the knob explodes off in my hand. The shower turns on, but water is coming out uncontrollably everywhere. Trying to stick the knob back on is ineffective - the water just will not turn off. So I did the only thing I could do - I took a shower, and then got out to call my landlord. He comes over, and turns of the water to the whole building. Because it is Saturday night, there is no hope of getting anyone to come fix it.

His bright solution - put plugs in the pipes to my shower, and turn the water back on to the building until my shower can be fixed. This seems like a good idea at the time...until my neighbor's apartment starts to get water in it. Now, we figured it was just the water that had sprayed back into the wall leaking out, so we just mopped it up and went to bed.

When I woke up, and stepped onto my carpet, it squished. Then I walked some more and found myself in about 2 inches of standing water. Apparently, the pipes have burst in my wall and was leaking all night - in both of our apartments. So we have spent the day mopping, trying desperately to contact our missing landlord and get a plumber to fix it. Which on a Sunday in Dominica is almost a laughable scenario.

I shall try to have pics showing the flooded apartment. I'm just hoping it gets fixed before classes start... :-(

PS. My friends who stayed on the island over break have seen Johnny Depp and he said hi, and the Black Pearl has been in our bay. :-) :-) :-D

I can't put up pics from last night yet, but trust me, I soon will.

So the party was at the new Sulfur Springs Sports Bar - which itself is a weird concept. And the "Dream Team" said that they had invited the cast and crew of PotC. So we're all thinking, yeah right.

But we get to the party, and Orlando Bloom shows up like 2 seconds later!!!!! He apparently is really nice and down to earth, with a sexy as hell accent. But I could never get too close, cause of all the slutty Indian girls hanging all over him. lol. But Ani did get a pic with him, so that will be up as soon as Yunus gives it to me.

A lot of the Asian pirates were there - I got to dance with a couple, even one of the midgets. :-) And then O'Dell was there - a guy I've seen around. He is a medic on the set, which was really cool. I have a feeling he's gonna be hanging around with us med students a lot. :-) But he's cool, and not so sketch.

You know, I almost don't want to come home this break so I can hang out with these people...;-) J/K seeing all you guys soon!!!!!!!

But we all got excited when we thought it was the real ship docked off Coconut's. Especially since the Pearl is supposed to be making an appearence here very soon.
Here's the pic I promised

That's Orlando Bloom in the back center, the one not smiling. :-) Still freaking hot. Sadly, I was not there for this picture, but I know about half of the people in this picture. Which is how I got the picture.

And the interesting thing it that the after mini party is claiming to have invited the cast and crew of PotC to the party. Which I have a hard time believing, because Jeremiah is hosting the party. And trust me, if you knew Jeremiah, you'd be skeptical too. But I do know that the midget, Marty in the film, is living at PBH along with a lot of other crew members, which I thought was kinda nifty.

*rant*
And to all those people who were commenting about stalking celebrities, and not understanding how people could get all freaky about them, all I have to say is be nice. Down here, all we do is study, study, study, away from family and friends, and malls and movie theaters and everything else you take for granted in the states and don't realize. So when we have celebrities all of a sudden living among us, we get happy. :-) And its weird, especially if you're not from NY or LA or something, where you always see famous people. *end rant*

Ok, I'm gonna go back to not studying for my final tomorrow. :-)

Johnny Depp

No, no, unfortunately I haven't even seen him around yet. But Ani found this article on the Onion, and I thought it was very amusing. I loved 21 Jump Street! I totally wanted to be like them!

What's even cooler is that the script that he was flipping through, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly was something that we learned about in neuro this semester - it was written by a guy who had locked in syndrome. He couldn't move anything but his eyes. So he wrote this book entirely by vertical eye movements, which were trasncribed by another guy.

Geez. Most people are too lazy to even write out their entire name when they sign, or wait more than 5 minutes to make mac n cheese, and this guy could write a book like this?!?!

I wonder what Johnny will play in this movie. Actually, I don't even know what the book is about, it could be crap. But it is potential crap that someone worked really hard to create.
