Abortion Predictions Mon, Mar 6 2006 05:36PM
| | So, without establishing any sort of qualitative value on abortion laws, good or bad, nor arguing one way or the other about whether abortion should be legal or otherwise, here is my prediction for US abortion laws, states in red I predict will ban abortion, states in blue I predict will not ban abortion.
To generate this set, I surveyed current laws and grouped them into three categories:
Cat 1: Notification/Consent for Abortion
Cat 2: Waiting Period
Cat 3: Mandatory Counciling
Each state was assigned a score in each category as follows:
Category 1 Scores:
0/6 - No laws on consent or notification
1/6 - Parental Notification Enjoined by state courts (no laws)
2/6 - Parental Consent Enjoined by state courts (no laws)
3/6 - At least one parent must be informed.
4/6 - Both parents must be informed.
5/6 - At least one parent must consent.
6/6 - Both parents must consent.
Category 2 Scores:
0/3 - No laws on waiting periods.
1/3 - Waiting period Enjoined by state courts (no laws)
2/3 - Waiting period of less than 24 hours.
3/3 - Waiting period of more than 24 hours.
Category 3 Scores:
0/3 - No counciling required.
1/3 - Counciling Enjoined by state courts (no laws)
2/3 - Counciling required by phone, mail, or in person.
3/3 - Counciling required in person.
I then created three scores, the first is simply the sum of all category scores, ranging from 0 - 3. The second is an average of all category scores, ranging 0 - 1.
Lastly, the score I used for the map, is a weighted sum of all category scores, weighting Cat 1 with 0.6, Cat 2 with 0.2, and Cat 3 with 0.2, ranging 0 - 1.
I then used South Dakota as a border for banning abortion. Thre is a fairly clear separation near this point in the plot, with MD, IA, and CO being somewhat close. | | 1 comment |

| I am almost certain that - while they prune their deep mine of trivia - they believe themselves to be engaged in the unfolding of humanity's Greatest Working.
Reponses to criticism of Wikipedia go something like this: the first is usually a paean to that pure democracy which is the project's noble fundament. If I don't like it, why don't I go edit it myself? To which I reply: because I don't have time to babysit the Internet. Hardly anyone does. If they do, it isn't exactly a compliment.
Any persistent idiot can obliterate your contributions. The fact of the matter is that all sources of information are not of equal value, and I don't know how or when it became impolitic to suggest it. In opposition to the spirit of Wikipedia, I believe there is such a thing as expertise.
The second response is: the collaborative nature of the apparatus means that the right data tends to emerge, ultimately, even if there is turmoil temporarily as dichotomous viewpoints violently intersect. To which I reply: that does not inspire confidence. In fact, it makes the whole effort even more ridiculous. What you've proposed is a kind of quantum encyclopedia, where genuine data both exists and doesn't exist depending on the precise moment I rely upon your discordant fucking mob for my information.

Revoking Rhode Island Statehood Wed, Nov 16 2005 10:28AM
| | I move we petition the government to revoke the statehood of Rhode Island. It's smaller than Cook County, has less population, and would make an excellent warm water port for Illinois.
When I initially posed this idea, there was some concern about Illinois taking Rhode Island over as a county. One user asked why we don't revoke the statehood of Indiana and Ohio and take them over. Well, quite frankly, Indiana and Ohio are states. Rhode Island is a county playing dress up with daddy's clothes so it can pretend to be a Big Boy and join the club. Sorry Rhode Island, but you're a poser.
Make no mistake, however, Ohio and Indiana will be conquered and brought into the Republic of Illinois. They'll maintain their statehood though, and unfortunately neither provides us with a good warm water port clear of ice year round.

Green Street Riots Wed, Apr 6 2005 08:34PM
| | From the DI:
' In a scene similar to Saturday's celebration, the steps and plaza in front of Foellinger Auditorium filled with people. Most in the crowd thrust up middle fingers and chanted "F*** UNC!" '
Personal note: They were also chanting "Fuck Sean May", but the DI would never print that...
' University Police officials said there had been five arrests made as of 12:10 a.m. Tuesday, ranging from arson, reckless conduct and illegal possession of fireworks. There were also two reports of criminal property damage, 15 fire calls ranging from trash cans to waste bins, four EMS calls, and reports of illegal firecrackers being set off. '
' Monday afternoon, public works employees removed street signs from Green Street and greased street lights to prevent anyone from climbing them and hanging off.
Other schools have seen more violent reactions to sports games. Last Saturday, more than 60 people were arrested during riots at Michigan State University, after the Spartans lost to the Tar Heels in the Final Four. Michigan State, The Ohio State University and the University of Maryland also saw riots in recent years after sports victories. ' | | 10 comments |
