Gary Sheffield says he won't play in the World Baseball Classic because:
"My season is when I get paid...I'm not doing that. ... I'm not sacrificing my body or taking a chance on an injury for something that's made up."

This is ridiculous. The Classic is a good idea because it will help to internationalize the sport and raise its profile in the States. Propagating the notion that all pro athletes are just in it for the money doesn't help the sport.

Sure there's the risk of getting injured, but athletes 'risking' themselves to represent their country isn't without precedent (see: World Cup). Consider also that the minimum number of games a team would play is 3, and the maximum is 8.

not that i fully agree with sheff. but look at what happened to aaron boone.. he was playing in a charity game and hurt his knee and because you sign a contract to not play outside of your baseball team the yankees had the rights to can him and they did. So if i was Sheff i'd stay away too.

No but it makes a pretty accurate statement...

hold up now- boone was playing a pickup *basketball* game, not baseball. sheff's being asked to do something he does on a regular basis to represent his country. its like the nba players (excuse me, *american* nba players) that refused to play in the olympics because its "not what they get paid for." a bunch of whiny bitches. i never liked sheff before (even when he wasn't a yankee), and i don't see that opinion changing any now.

Sheff is the T.O. of MLB, or more accurately, T.O. is the Sheff of the NFL. Fantastic offensive talent, big mouth, very little in the way of brains. Why are people surprised when this punk acts like the punk he showed himself to be when he deliberately played poorly in Milwaukee?

The Classic is such a great idea and, as much as I like Sheff for being a Yankee and helping to carry one of my fantasy teams this year, I just don't get it. Tons of people around baseball know how good this is going to be, how could he not want to be a part of its founding? Either way, I don't think it'd be too much of a problem for the U.S. team to "lose" him for this competition; baseballamerica.com has Sheff as one of the projected starting outfielders, but I'm sure someone else will do nicely. Then again, this site also thinks that Larry Walker will be able to stand, let alone play baseball as a starter, when this thing rolls around.
